Your next two weeks in Shasta County
Redding Rundown
Local events, trails & what's worth knowing, twice a month.
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and the weekend before it is the busy one. Market Street gets a fall festival and a jack-o'-lantern contest, a biologist walks Clear Creek looking for spawning salmon, and the pumpkin patch has two weekends left. Then the clocks change and Election Day follows two days later. Here's what's on through November 3. Every listing links straight to its source, so you can check times and prices yourself. , Nathan

McCloud Falls
About 70 minutes up I-5 and east on Highway 89, past the little town of McCloud. The McCloud River steps down over three falls, Lower, Middle and Upper, and the river trail links them about a mile apart on mostly easy grades along a basalt gorge. Fall is the quiet season up there, with the cleanest light and the smallest crowds. The river is spring-fed from Mt. Shasta, so it runs full all year and stays cold. Get breakfast in McCloud first, and if you want a longer day, the Bunny Flat trailhead on Mt. Shasta is about 20 minutes away.
