The recreation is the reason, not the bonus.
In a lot of California you trade scenery for a payment you can live with, or the other way around. Up here you don't have to pick. The houses are reachable and the outdoors is right out the door.
This is the page I send people who ask "but what would we actually do here?" Each spot below has its own guide with the drive time from your future driveway, what it's like on the ground, and my own photos and video. Start with whatever you'd do this weekend.
Lakes & rivers
The water that keeps people here. Swim, paddle, fish, or just put the boat in after work.
Waterfalls & trails
Snowmelt cascades and real hikes, not roadside photo stops.
Mountains & parks
Two signature volcanoes plus the granite spires of Castle Crags — all an easy day from town.
In town
You don't have to leave the city limits to get outside.
Worth the drive
A bigger trip, but the kind people plan a weekend around.
Recreation around Redding — common questions
What is there to do in Redding and Shasta County?+
Within about an hour of Redding you can reach big lakes (Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown), waterfalls and trails (Whiskeytown Falls, McCloud Falls), Mt. Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Sacramento River and Sundial Bridge in town, and Hat Creek for fly fishing. The coast redwoods are a longer day trip to the west.
What outdoor recreation is closest to Redding?+
Whiskeytown Lake and its waterfalls are about 15 to 30 minutes west, and the Sacramento River Trail and Sundial Bridge are in town. Shasta Lake is about 15 minutes north. These are the everyday spots people use after work and on weekends.
What are the best day trips from Redding?+
McCloud Falls and Mt. Shasta (about 70 minutes north), Lassen Volcanic National Park (about an hour east), and Hat Creek for fishing. The Avenue of the Giants and the coast redwoods are a longer day or weekend, roughly 3.5 hours west.
This is the part of the pitch I actually mean
The houses are the transaction. The weekends are the reason. If a life with the lake, the trails, and the mountains in easy reach sounds right, I can help you find the spot to come home to.
